Estimated Texas Title Transfer Cost
Choose your transfer type and county to estimate the applicable tax and title fee. Registration and related charges are not included.
Need the full Texas vehicle cost?
Transferring ownership is not necessarily the complete cost to register and operate the vehicle. Registration, inspection-related charges, EV fees, emissions-related charges and other government costs may apply separately.
The title fee alone is not always the full transfer cost. A purchased vehicle can also owe motor-vehicle tax; a qualifying gift or even exchange uses its applicable special tax. This estimate adds only that transaction tax and the title fee. Other transaction-specific charges, registration costs or penalties may require separate handling.
Texas title fees by county
The verified combined title fee is $28.00 or $33.00, based on the purchaser’s or owner’s county of residence. The calculator uses the existing county-based title rules and charges the fee once. It does not add county registration fees.
Texas title transfer tax
Ordinary vehicle purchases are subject to the verified 6.25% motor-vehicle tax. A dealer purchase can include qualifying trade-in and rebate deductions and taxable accessories. A separately stated documentary fee does not increase taxable consideration and is not included in this government-cost estimate.
Private-party purchases and SPV
For ordinary used private-party purchases subject to SPV, taxable value is the greater of the actual purchase price or 80% of full Standard Presumptive Value. A qualifying certified appraisal may apply when price is below that threshold, but cannot be below the purchase price. Enter the full SPV yourself; the official value may change by the time title is processed.
A qualifying gift uses the $10.00 Texas gift tax instead of normal percentage tax, plus the applicable title fee. Not every transfer called a gift qualifies. You must explicitly confirm eligibility; a zero price does not establish it.
Even exchanges
A qualifying even exchange uses the $5.00 special tax plus the applicable title fee. SPV does not apply to this branch. Confirm the transaction qualifies with the appropriate Texas authority before relying on this estimate.
Inheritance, divorce-related transfers, lien-only changes, bonded titles and salvage/rebuilt titles need special handling and are not estimated here. Review official TxDMV title guidance and contact the county for those cases.

Ordinary purchased vehicles generally owe 6.25% motor-vehicle tax on the applicable taxable value. Qualifying gifts and even exchanges use their special tax instead. This page does not model every exemption or special transfer.
How does SPV affect a private-party title transfer?
