Understanding Texas taxes and fees
A Texas vehicle tax, title and license estimate brings several charges together. Here’s what each part means.
Texas vehicle sales tax
Texas motor-vehicle sales tax is 6.25%. A qualifying motor vehicle traded directly to the same seller as part of the purchase reduces the taxable value. Use its trade-in value, not your loan payoff or equity. Separately stated rebates also reduce taxable consideration; a separately stated documentary fee does not increase it.
Texas title fees
The combined title fee is $28.00 or $33.00, depending on your county of residence. The calculator uses the verified county rules and charges the title fee once.
Texas registration fees
Annual base registration is $50.75 for the lighter supported weight band or $54.00 for the heavier band. Registration also includes TexasSure, local county fees, inspection replacement, and processing fees. Qualifying new vehicles receive two-year initial registration; some fees are charged once, not doubled.
Private-party purchases and SPV
Standard Presumptive Value is TxDMV’s reference value for a used vehicle. For ordinary private-party used purchases, tax is based on the greater of the purchase price or 80% of full SPV, unless an eligible valid certified appraisal applies. The county uses the value available when it processes title, so your lookup value can change.
Electric vehicles
Fully electric vehicles pay an additional $200.00 for annual registration or $400.00 for qualifying two-year initial registration. Hybrids and plug-in hybrids do not pay this EV fee. Electric-only vehicles do not receive an emissions registration fee.
New Texas residents
A qualifying new resident bringing an out-of-state acquired vehicle already registered in their own name pays a $90.00 flat motor-vehicle tax in place of normal percentage tax. Title and registration fees still apply. If the ownership and registration condition is not met, the flat-tax branch does not apply.
Applicable emissions-related registration fees are separate from the charge paid to an inspection station. This estimate includes the registration-side fees only. Bexar County’s emissions program transition is applied by transaction date.

Common questions about Texas car sales tax, title, and registration costs.
How much are tax, title and license fees in Texas?
There is no single flat TTL amount. Your estimate depends on the taxable vehicle value, purchase type, county, weight, model year, fuel, and registration duration. Enter your details above to get an itemized total of taxes and government fees.
What is the Texas vehicle sales tax rate?
The normal Texas motor-vehicle tax rate is 6.25%. Eligible gifts, even exchanges, and qualifying new-resident transfers use special tax rules instead.
Does a trade-in reduce vehicle sales tax in Texas?
Yes, a qualifying motor vehicle transferred directly to the same seller in the same purchase reduces the taxable consideration. The allowance uses the vehicle’s trade-in value, not equity. Selling your old vehicle separately does not qualify for this deduction.
How does Texas SPV work for private-party sales?
For an ordinary used private-party purchase, the taxable value is the greater of the actual purchase price or 80% of full SPV. A valid certified appraisal may apply when the price is below that SPV threshold. Enter the full value from TxDMV; you do not need to calculate 80% yourself.
How much does it cost to title a vehicle in Texas?
The combined Texas title fee is $28.00 or $33.00, based on the purchaser’s or owner’s county of residence. The calculator chooses the applicable county amount.
Do electric vehicles pay additional Texas registration fees?
Yes. Supported fully electric cars and light trucks pay an additional $200.00 annually or $400.00 for qualifying two-year initial registration. This fee does not apply to hybrids or plug-in hybrids.
How are qualifying new Texas residents taxed?
The qualifying motor-vehicle tax is $90.00 when the vehicle was acquired out of state and was already registered in the new resident’s own name. This replaces normal percentage tax, but does not replace title, registration, or applicable local fees.
