Understand the price behind the dealer quote

What does out-the-door price mean?

Here, out-the-door price is the dealer purchase transaction total after entered rebates, taxable add-ons, documentary fees, tax and government fees, before financing interest. A qualifying trade-in affects the tax calculation, but its allowance is shown separately as payment credit. With a trade-in, review both the headline price and the amount after credit.

What fees are included in a Texas out-the-door price?

The estimate combines the negotiated selling price, entered dealer-controlled charges and applicable government costs, less qualifying rebates or discounts. Government costs can include motor-vehicle tax, title, base registration, TexasSure, county/local fees, inspection replacement, emissions-related or EV fees, and processing and handling. Not every vehicle receives every charge.

Texas vehicle sales tax

Ordinary dealer purchases use the verified 6.25% Texas motor-vehicle tax. The engine calculates taxable consideration from price, taxable accessories, qualifying rebates and a qualifying same-seller trade-in. It floors taxable value at zero. A separately stated documentary fee is excluded from that tax base.

How trade-ins affect Texas car tax

A qualifying motor vehicle transferred directly to the same seller in the same transaction reduces taxable consideration. The trade-in allowance then provides separate credit toward the amount owed. This calculator does not deduct that credit from the headline OTD price or subtract it twice. It does not calculate loan payoff or equity.

Dealer documentary fees

A separately stated documentary fee is a dealer-controlled transaction charge, not a government registration fee. Under the verified rules, it increases the amount you pay without increasing motor-vehicle taxable consideration. Enter the quoted amount; this calculator supplies no default dealer fee.

Dealer add-ons

Dealer add-ons can increase the purchase price. Enter only accessories or attachments known to be taxable under the modeled rules and not already included in your selling price. Those amounts affect both the transaction total and tax base. This tool does not classify named products or assume every add-on is taxable.

Government fees vs dealer fees

Government taxes and registration charges come from applicable state and local rules. Dealer-controlled amounts originate from the dealership. CarCostProof separates these categories so you can review the quote transparently; that distinction does not imply a dealer charge is improper, optional or negotiable.

Texas out-the-door car price FAQ

What is an out-the-door car price?

It is the vehicle purchase transaction price including applicable taxes and fees, before financing interest. This tool shows a headline OTD price and, when applicable, a separate amount after trade-in payment credit.

How do I calculate the out-the-door price of a car in Texas?

Enter the negotiated selling price, qualifying rebates, taxable add-ons and separately stated documentary fee, plus your county and vehicle details. The engine calculates government fees. The tool combines those amounts and shows qualifying trade-in credit separately.

What is the Texas vehicle sales tax rate?

The ordinary dealer motor-vehicle tax rate is 6.25%. Tax uses the adjusted taxable consideration rather than every dollar in the final transaction total.

Does a trade-in reduce Texas car sales tax?

A qualifying same-seller motor-vehicle trade-in reduces taxable consideration. It also provides separate payment credit, which this calculator displays after the headline OTD price. A separate sale of your old vehicle is not the modeled qualifying trade-in.

Do rebates reduce Texas car tax?

Qualifying separately stated rebates or discounts passed to the purchaser reduce taxable consideration and the transaction amount. Do not enter them again if they are already reflected in your selling price.

Is a dealer documentary fee included in the out-the-door price?

Yes, when entered. A separately stated documentary fee increases the transaction price but does not increase the motor-vehicle tax base under the verified rules.

Is the dealer documentary fee a government fee?

No. This calculator lists it under dealer-controlled charges, separately from taxes, title and registration-related government charges.

Are dealer add-ons included in the out-the-door price?

The entered taxable add-ons are included and also affect taxable consideration. This tool does not automatically classify products or include charges that you have not entered.

Does this calculator include financing interest?

No. APR, loan terms, monthly payments, down payment, lender charges and trade-in loan payoff are outside this purchase-price estimate. The result is not an amount-financed figure.

Does this calculator work for private-party purchases?

No. It is for Texas dealer purchases. Use the focused private-party/SPV or title-transfer calculators for a purchase from a private seller.

Why is my dealer's quoted price higher than the calculator estimate?

A quote may contain additional products, different entered prices or charges, financing amounts, or transaction-specific costs outside this model. Compare its itemized lines with the estimate, review dealer-provided amounts independently and verify government charges with the applicable authorities.
